Cataloging is Really that Old?

I loved the first section in the Chowdhury reading that expanded on the history of cataloging. It’s something that we think so little about and to know that what we are doing today is based on something that goes back centuries is pretty great. It would be really interesting to study the types of cataloging they used in Alexandria as well as those closer to what we use today like the French Code of 1791.

I was unaware that Cutter was alive and working in 1876. We still use his system (Cutter numbers in LC) today. I think it’s important to learn where our profession started and what it has evolved from.
