What’s so great about the Dewey Decimal System?

I was very interested to learn some history about Melvil Dewey and the creation and use of the Dewey Decimal System. The article mentioned that the ingenuity of Dewey was that he joined together the strengths of other systems to create a numbering system that indicated a field of knowledge. I had never thought about this before.  I also enjoyed the tidbit about some libraries organizing books aesthetically prior to the creation of DDC.

I am curious to know why 95% of primary and secondary schools use the Dewey Decimal System but only 25% of colleges and universities do. Is it because libraries of higher education require a classification system with more categories and more specificity?
