In chapter 6 of Chowdhury and Chowdhury, they discuss the topics of subject heading lists and thesauri. It wasn’t until graduate school that I learned what a thesauri was. I think that they can be helpful when doing research on a database because it allows you to “speak the language” of the database. However, after the class about radical cataloging, it is hard for me to remove that critical lens. As previously mentioned, thesauri allow one to “speak their language.” While this is very practical, I find that it can also be problematic because it decontextualizes the research to just use what words are deemed as relevant.
